报告摘要：We discuss applications of singularity theory to some nonlinear elliptic differential equations. We first give a short introduction of singularity theory (or catastrophe theory) in the sense of H. Whitney, R. Thom and V.I. Arnold in finite dimensions and discuss the extensions to Banach spaces. We then consider elliptic equations with nonlinearities which interact with an eigenvalue of the linear operator and classify the singularities of the corresponding operator. For certain equations this allows to give a complete characterization of the solution geometry and to determine the exact number of solutions.

报告人简介：Bernhard Ruf，意大利米兰大学教授，他的研究方向包括非线性分析、偏微分方程以及变分学等，研究工作发表在国际数学杂志《Comm. Pure Appl. Math.》、《J. Eur. Math. Soc.》、《Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.》、《J. Reine Angew. Math. 》、《Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa Cl. Sci. 》、《J. Funct. Anal.》、《Indiana U. Math. J.》等上。特别在Trudinger-Moser不等式的最佳常数和极值函数的存在性问题等方面，Bernhard Ruf教授发表了一系列论文。 Bernhard Ruf教授是国际数学杂志《Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems》、《Nonlinear Analysis》的编委及《Milan Journal in Mathematics》的主编。
